For nearly four decades, Michael Pope has served Shelby County with courage and integrity. Unlike his opponent, tied to today’s broken system, Michael brings the independence and crisis leadership we need to fix a sheriff’s office rocked by jail deaths, officer shortages, and budget failures. As a candidate for Sheriff, Michael is committed to upholding the highest standards of justice, security, and community well-being. His career has been defined by dedication to public service, strategic leadership, and a proven track record of success in high-pressure situations.
Career Highlights & Leadership
Currently serving as a Criminal Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office in Memphis, TN.
Throughout his career, Michael has held pivotal roles in various law enforcement units, including:
Commander for Civil and Criminal Court Operations: Managing security procedures for in-and-out-of-custody defendants and handling complex administrative functions.
Field Commander for Domestic Violence and Special Victims Unit: Leading efforts to address domestic violence and sex crimes, while providing critical support and training for officers.
Chief of Police (West Memphis Police Department): Successfully leading operations, achieving remarkable community engagement, and implementing innovative initiatives such as the department’s first drone unit.
Michael’s broad expertise spans everything from crisis management to evidence collection and public information. He is also trained in specialized fields such as bomb tech response, riot control, and active shooter management, equipping him with the skills necessary to handle the most challenging situations with authority and calm.
Education & Training
Michael is a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety and Bethel University, where he earned his Master’s in Criminal Justice. He has earned prestigious recognitions such as the FBI LEEDA Trilogy Award for excellence in leadership, having completed advanced training in supervision, executive leadership, and command. His commitment to continuous learning and professional development ensures he is always prepared to meet the evolving challenges of law enforcement.
